Online course refunds and cancellation
Almost everything about a refund is decided before you pay, by what the provider published and what you kept. Two minutes now, or a long argument later.

Read these three things before you pay
| The refund window | How many days, from what date — purchase, course start, or first access. These are three different dates and providers use all of them. |
|---|---|
| What voids it | Many policies end the refund right once a proportion of the material has been accessed. Know the threshold before you start browsing the content. |
| How a refund is issued | To the original payment method, as credit, or as a voucher. A “refund policy” that only issues platform credit is a different product from the one people assume they are buying. |
What to save, at the moment of purchase
- The sales or course page as it stood — a print to PDF takes ten seconds and pages change.
- The refund and cancellation policy, saved separately.
- The payment confirmation and receipt.
- Any pre-purchase promises made in chat, email or a call.
The fourth is the one people skip and the one that matters most in a dispute. A commitment made on a sales call and not repeated anywhere in writing is extremely difficult to rely on afterwards — so send a short email summarising what you were told and keep the reply.
Asking for a refund in a way that works
- Write, do not call. A phone conversation leaves nothing behind.
- Quote the provider's own policy clause and attach it.
- State clearly what you are asking for and by when.
- Attach the receipt and the page you bought from.
- Keep it factual. A calm request quoting a published policy is much harder to refuse than an angry one.
If a written, policy-quoting request is ignored, the next steps depend on how you paid and how much. A card chargeback is often the fastest route and the window is short, so raise it promptly. A consumer forum complaint is the route for larger amounts, and it runs on exactly the documents listed above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a refund for an online course?
It depends almost entirely on the refund policy published before you paid — the window, what voids it, and how a refund is issued. Read those three things before purchase rather than after.
What if the provider has no refund policy?
Ask for one in writing before you pay. If you have already paid, ask now and keep the reply — a provider that cannot produce a policy it applied to you is in a weak position in any dispute.
Does accessing the course void my refund?
Many policies end the refund right once a proportion of the material has been accessed. Check that threshold before you start browsing the content, not after.
Can I do a chargeback on my card?
Often yes, where a service was not delivered as described. Chargeback windows are short, so raise it with your bank promptly and have the sales page, receipt and correspondence ready.
Is platform credit the same as a refund?
No. Some policies issue credit or a voucher rather than returning money to your payment method. That is a materially different product and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.
