The three instruments

Who can issue itWhat it represents
DegreeA university, under its degree-awarding authorityA full academic qualification with statutory standing
DiplomaA university, or an autonomous institute under its own standardsA complete programme, shorter or differently framed than a degree
CertificateAnyone at all — a university, an institute, a company, a platform, an individualWhatever the issuer says it represents

The third row is the important one. There is no restriction on who may issue a certificate, which is why the word covers everything from a rigorous university programme to an automatically generated PDF for watching some videos. The word itself carries no information.

This is not an argument against certificates. It is an argument for reading who issued one and what they say it certifies — because unlike a degree, the word does not do that work for you.

The one question

“Which organisation issues this, and what exactly will it say?”

Everything else follows. A certificate from a body whose assessment employers in your field already recognise is valuable. A certificate from an entity nobody in your field has heard of is worth whatever you learned, and nothing more — which may still be plenty, but is a different proposition from what the marketing implies.

Issued by a universityAsk whether it is a degree, a diploma, or a certificate of participation. They are not the same and universities issue all three.
Issued by a professional bodyOften the most valuable kind, because the body's assessment is already recognised in that field.
Issued by a vendor or platformValue tracks the vendor's standing in the specific market. Some are close to mandatory; some are decorative.
Issued by the course provider itselfWorth whatever the provider's name is worth to the people you want to impress. Sometimes a great deal. Often nothing.

Reading a course page

Four things to look for, in order:

  1. The issuing organisation, named. Not “an industry-recognised certificate” — a name.
  2. What the certificate says. Completion, participation, or a passed assessment. These are three very different claims.
  3. Whether there is an assessment at all, and whether it can be failed. A certificate that cannot be failed certifies attendance.
  4. Where it can be verified. A verification link or register makes a certificate checkable, which is most of what makes it useful.

A course that answers all four clearly is being straight with you, whatever it costs. A course that is vague on all four has told you what the certificate is worth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a degree, a diploma and a certificate?

A degree is issued by a university under its degree-awarding authority. A diploma is a complete programme from a university or an autonomous institute. A certificate can be issued by anyone at all, which is why the word by itself tells you nothing about what it represents.

Is an online certificate a qualification?

It is whatever the issuer says it is. Some certify a passed assessment from a body employers already recognise; others certify that you watched some videos. Read who issued it and what it claims.

Can a private company issue a valid certificate?

Yes, and in some fields vendor certifications carry more weight with employers than academic qualifications do. Value tracks the issuer's standing in the specific market, not any official status.

Does a certificate of completion mean I passed something?

Not necessarily. Completion and participation certificates typically record attendance. If there is no assessment that can be failed, the certificate is recording that you were there.

How do I know a certificate can be verified?

Look for a verification link, a credential ID or a public register. A certificate nobody can check independently is difficult for an employer to rely on, however genuine it is.
