Course or qualification: what are you actually buying?

Two products in one wrapper

Every online course is two products shrink-wrapped together. The first is teaching: the lectures, the reading, the tutor’s attention, the structure that makes you show up. The second is attestation: an instrument that asks a third party to believe something about you. They feel like one purchase because they arrive in one box, but they succeed and fail separately — excellent teaching can end in paper nobody trusts, and a respected instrument can sit on top of indifferent teaching.

Most disappointment with online education is a mismatch here: someone paid attestation prices for what they should have judged as teaching, or bought lovely teaching when their situation demanded an instrument. So before comparing any two fees, settle which product you are actually shopping for.

Three questions that separate them

1. Strip away the certificate. Still worth the fee? If yes, you are buying teaching — so judge it as teaching: syllabus depth, tutor access, currency of material, nothing else. Recognition tables are irrelevant to this purchase.
2. Strip away the learning. Still worth something? Imagine you somehow learned nothing but hold the instrument. If it would still open a door — an eligibility rule, a licence condition, a filter — you are buying attestation, and the issuer’s standing is nearly the whole of the value. 3. Name the audience. Who, specifically, will be shown this — and what will they check? “Employers generally” is not an answer. A named audience makes the first two questions easy; no named audience usually means you are buying teaching, and should stop paying for attestation you will never present.

Why the same subject carries three prices

Because the attestation layer, not the teaching, is the expensive part to make trustworthy. Examination integrity, entitlement to award, verification — that infrastructure costs more than video production, and it is what the upper price tiers are mostly purchasing. You can watch the layer being priced almost in isolation by looking at one teaching operation handling two different instruments. IICT — expanded: the Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade, an autonomous Lucknow institute at work since 1997 — awards its own diplomas, which are institute credentials sitting outside UGC purview. The same institute also serves as the distance learning centre for Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU), Meerut, holder of a NAAC A grade, whose UGC-entitled distance MBA — two years, dual specialisation — totals ₹65,000. The roles never blur: that degree and the entitlement behind it belong to the university; teaching, mentoring and support belong to the institute. Two instruments, one classroom culture — and the higher fee on the second buys, in large part, precisely the statutory attestation layer: a university degree rather than an institute award. Neither purchase is the “right” one in general. If your answer to question three names a gatekeeper who checks entitlements, the degree is cheap at the difference.
